Description

3M Transpore White Surgical Dressing Tape

3M Transpore White is a paper-plastic hybrid surgical tape that bridges the gap between standard paper tape and plastic tape — combining the breathability and skin gentleness of paper tape with the moisture resistance and durability of a plastic backing. Designed specifically for dressing applications and general-purpose clinical securement, it delivers reliable adhesion for up to 72 hours on dry skin while remaining gentle enough for at-risk and sensitive skin populations that standard plastic tapes may irritate.

Manufactured by 3M (now Solventum), Transpore White uses a porous spun rayon blend backing that is soft, conformable, and breathable — maintaining skin integrity during extended wear. Its bi-directional tear makes it fast to apply with or without gloves. Available in 1”, 2”, and 3” widths on 10-yard rolls, with single-patient-use roll options also available. Not made with natural rubber latex.

Key Features

  • Paper-plastic hybrid construction: Porous spun rayon blend backing combines the breathability of paper tape with the moisture resistance and durability of a plastic tape
  • Gentle on skin: Designed for at-risk, sensitive, and fragile skin populations where standard plastic tape adhesion causes trauma on removal
  • 72-hour adhesion: Reliable initial and long-term adhesion to dry skin for up to 72 hours — suitable for extended dressing wear intervals
  • Adheres on damp skin: Maintains adhesion on slightly moist skin surfaces where paper tape would fail
  • Bi-directional tear: Tears cleanly lengthwise and across without scissors — easy to handle with gloves
  • Porous and breathable: Air exchange through the backing maintains skin integrity and reduces maceration risk during extended wear
  • Water-resistant: More moisture-resistant than paper tape — maintains adhesion through brief moisture exposure
  • Adheres to itself and tubing: Bonds to plastic tubing for IV line and catheter securement applications
  • Hypoallergenic: Not made with natural rubber latex
  • Single-patient rolls available: 1534S-1, 1534S-2 for infection-control settings

What Is This Product?

3M Transpore White is constructed from a porous spun rayon blend backing — a soft, white, opaque material that is distinct from both the clear polyethylene film of Transpore Clear (1527) and the crepe paper backing of Micropore (1530). The rayon blend creates a tape that is physically softer and more cushioning than plastic tape, while being significantly more moisture-resistant than paper tape. This hybrid material profile is what 3M describes as “paper-plastic hybrid” — it occupies the clinical space between these two tape categories.

The acrylate adhesive on Transpore White is formulated for gentleness as well as reliability — it is specifically positioned by 3M for at-risk skin patients where Transpore Clear’s stronger plastic adhesive may be too aggressive, but where standard paper tape does not provide sufficient moisture resistance or wear duration for the clinical need. The 72-hour adhesion claim makes it suitable for dressing protocols that require tape to remain in place between visits without frequent reinforcement.

Indications / Applications

3M Transpore White is indicated for:

  • Securing lightweight and moderate wound dressings on intact and at-risk periwound skin
  • Dressing fixation for patients requiring extended wear intervals of up to 72 hours
  • Secondary securement of IV lines, catheters, and non-critical tubing
  • Blood draw site securement post-venipuncture
  • Anchoring dressings on patients with sensitive or reactive skin where standard plastic tape causes irritation
  • Dressing fixation in environments with mild moisture exposure where paper tape would fail prematurely
  • General-purpose securement across hospital, home care, long-term care, and outpatient settings

Note: Transpore White is water-resistant but not waterproof. For wound sites requiring full waterproof dressing fixation, see Kendall Wet-Pruf Waterproof Tape. For the most fragile skin where even gentle plastic tape adhesive causes damage, a silicone tape is the more appropriate choice.

How It Works

Transpore White functions through its pressure-sensitive acrylate adhesive, which activates on contact when pressed firmly onto the skin or dressing surface. The porous spun rayon blend backing allows moisture vapor and air to pass through the tape, preventing the occlusion-related skin breakdown that fully sealed tapes can cause during 72-hour wear periods. The rayon fibers in the backing create a cushioning layer between the adhesive and the outer surface, contributing to the tape’s softer feel and lower trauma profile on removal compared to harder plastic tape backings.

Adhesion to damp skin is a functional advantage of the plastic component in the hybrid backing — unlike paper tape, which loses adhesion rapidly when wet, Transpore White maintains its bond in the mildly moist conditions common in clinical environments and on patients with perspiration at dressing sites. The bi-directional tear perforations allow clean hand-tearing in both directions for fast, glove-friendly application.

Application Instructions

  1. Prepare the skin: Ensure the application skin is clean and as dry as possible for optimal adhesion — Transpore White can adhere on slightly damp skin but bonds strongest on dry skin
  2. Tear to length: Pull the desired length from the roll and tear cleanly across, or tear lengthwise into a narrower strip for precision securement
  3. Apply without stretching: Lay the tape down onto the skin surface without pulling or stretching — apply firm pressure from the center outward to the edges to activate the adhesive fully
  4. For tubing securement: Loop the tape around the tubing and anchor both ends to the skin using a chevron or H-taping technique per your facility protocol; Transpore White bonds to itself and to plastic tubing
  5. Monitor the dressing: Check at each clinical visit for edge lifting or periwound skin changes beneath the tape margin

Do not pull Transpore White tape perpendicular to the skin on removal. Peel back at a low angle parallel to the skin, supporting the tissue just ahead of the peel line. Use a medical-grade adhesive remover for strongly adhered tape on sensitive skin.

Dressing Change Guidance

Transpore White is designed for up to 72-hour wear on dry skin — change at the dressing change interval or when the tape is lifting, no longer sealing the dressing edge, or when the periwound skin shows signs of irritation beneath the tape margin. The 72-hour wear rating makes it particularly suitable for home care protocols where dressing changes occur every two to three days and tape integrity between changes is clinically important. Do not reuse tape once removed.

Why Choose This Product

  • Bridges paper and plastic: Delivers the breathability patients appreciate from paper tape with the durability and moisture resistance that clinical settings require — a genuine hybrid, not a compromise
  • 72-hour adhesion: Fewer reinforcement tape changes between dressing visits reduces caregiver time and adhesive trauma to the periwound skin over time
  • Gentler than Transpore Clear: The softer rayon blend backing and adhesive profile make this the appropriate step down from clear plastic tape for at-risk skin patients
  • Adheres on damp skin: Practical advantage over paper tape in clinical environments where perfectly dry skin is not always achievable
  • Trusted 3M brand: Part of the same Transpore family as Transpore Clear — familiar to procurement teams and clinical staff
  • Single-patient rolls available: Supports infection-control protocols in acute care settings
