About Drainable Ostomy Pouches

A drainable pouch has an open tail at the bottom that is sealed with a clip, Velcro, or an integrated closure — allowing the pouch to be emptied multiple times throughout the day without removing it from the skin. This design is standard for ileostomy users, whose output is liquid and continuous, requiring frequent emptying. Colostomy users with softer or less predictable output also benefit from drainable pouches. Drainable pouches are typically changed every one to four days depending on the skin barrier wear schedule. Integrated charcoal filters allow gas to vent silently through the pouch wall, neutralizing odor without requiring manual release. Urostomy drainable pouches have a tap or valve at the bottom for urine drainage rather than a clip closure. Pediatric drainable pouches (ConvaTec Little Ones) are sized for infants and children with shorter pouch lengths and smaller openings.
